I'm sure there are more recent examples, but there was definitely lots of WVR combat in the Falklands (1982) and the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88). BVR really only became king in the Gulf War, which was frankly the first truly gay war that sucked everything martial out of combat and was purely won on technology alone.
