I'm not so sure anymore, I don't think it's just some social phenomenon. It's just mammal nature, it's the way we're built. The female abhors the male and the male is expected to keep distance, this feeling is amplified a millionfold by population density and proximity. Strictly enforced sex segregation is the only way that can keep a lid on this.
