The creative team was STRUGGLING how to introduce a new, female character into the films -- who even if didn't fit perfectly, at least worked.

It turns out the answer was right under their nose.

Instead of going with something 'notoriously unique'...
because of all the mental-defects of all the characters...

there was room in the film for an actual NORMAL person to show up!

At some point, she WILL give Shinji some sorta offshoot of an Oedipus Complex, by way of her being his mom's college buddy.

And, more likely than not, the traumatic realizations will occur just as he gets a whiff of that 'smell!'
