What I don't understand is that the whole message of Evangelion, and especially the rebuilds, is supposedly to "Go Outside", while the actual events of the rebuild movies directly go against it. What exactly do the last two movies provide thematically, or, for example, by portraying this whole arc of Shinji being hated for protecting somebody he loved? If we look at the events of the rebuild movies, you have to conclude that humanity would have been better off if Shinji didn't try to reach out or connect to anybody. There never would have been a party, and Asuka might not have been injured because both Rei and Shinji would have been available. The third impact would've been delayed, and the plan by SEELE would've entailed the death of way less people through instrumentality. The last two movies are totally incoherent. And the real kicker is making Shinji get with Mari, despite setting up a romance between him and Rei for the entirety of the 4 movies, hinting that she is still alive, and even introducing a new version of her that he also falls in love with. Rei is used as a empty mechanism to make Shinji take action, because they need to be le dark and mysterious by making Gendo some mastermind who actually planned for every contingency, and so the relationship between Shinji and Rei is planned by him. Its so fucking stupid. The arcane, incomprehensible plot points completely flatten and ruin relationships between characters that actually communicates the themes he wants to portray in a " show not tell" kind of way, in favor of this lacking-in-exposition vague overarching plot which nobody fucking understands.

I sense the bigger part of the ending is acting as a metaphor for Anno stepping away from the franchise. Everything comes off as his way of resolving his feelings about everything and then moving on.
