the entire POINT of going flamer is to lay down barriers to slow bugs and burn them in the process to both cc AND clear out hordes and help slow bosses while they are in a good position for the scout or gunner to lay into them.

I wouldn't. The platform gun is perfectly fine as it is and has been used to break the game multiple times, resulting in patches to rebalance things.
All of the early ways to cheese missions revolved around the platform gun.
