The problem is, they never did enough to make the missions feel like they had enough variety. The biomes don't feel too distinct, some of the mission types are too basic or overlap with others, modifiers ironically do very little to spice up the mission, ditto for rare events and core infusors, and so on and so forth. What was keeping the game fresh was that it was getting regular updates, but there wasn't enough depth to the novelty they were adding to keep things going beyond that. It ultimately meant that DRG has less replayability than something with preset individual levels, as those are at least all distinct enough from each other.

Vanilla bugs can be faster than you. No Aggressiveness 2 needed.
Sometimes (maybe 2 out of 5 encounters) the bugs will go into "sprint mode" and no matter what how fast you are, the bugs will always match "your speed + %" to take at least 1 bite and then back to their normal run speed.
This is easier to see if you have 30+ swarmers chasing you than Grunts.

There's not enough freedom to yours or enemies or mission mechanics to make matches feel different. Mechanics are where you get all the mileage especially if you refuse to make linear content like a campaign or something that mimics a campaign without a story. Having more options is never a bad idea. Driller does have Ice Spear for infinite range high burst damage, and Sludge Blast for medium/close range, though I don't recommend letting any bugs get into "Close" range in H5-2222.
But you seem to mistake my idea as something the player MUST use when implemented, which is not true. The reason why I said "(if you want)" is because I've seen others doing it, not me always doing it.
Other than that, I agree, I use Drills and EPC if (I have) for digging and dealing with frozen horde and Mactera balls. Freezing + Axes can also be a good high burst damage option at close range. Then, for horde clear, freeze + fire C4 (if implemented), Napalm C4 alone wouldn't deal much damage at all for how fast the bugs are with all modifiers on.

Rockpox started in November 2022 with season 3 and ended with season 5 in june 2024. It was pretty long for something a lot of people didn't like, and after season 4 we didn't have any news for a while so it felt like we were stuck with it.
