Why is there full light here and underneath all rocks?
Asperities should only be that bright if the light source if nearly perfectly grazing the surface, and that's clearly not the case since the sun is fully above.
If you want to suggest shadowed shape, make your shadows 8,8,8 instead of 0,0,0 and have the bumps be 0,0,0. Making them fully lit is opposite of how light behave and feel really weird.
