I think the oxygen timer adds a lot to the experience too, being on a timer to surface before you die is one thing, hiding from a reaper and worrying about your oxygen ramps the anxiety up further.

IAM NOT MAKING A GAME WHY AM I EVEN HERE. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY BRAIN?
how to reprogram yourself to stop?
We used to have conflicts about what the next game jam would be.
Sometimes it ended up in there being two simultaneous jams.
Let that sink in, nu-/agdg/.
hey guise it's been a while, I was the guy working on the Cyberpunk Daggerfall project when tragically after getting the core code base done I had a project corruption and ended up taking a 2 month break before trying to start from scratch and realizing my project wasn't corrupted it probably just was a single issue which I spent today fixing and updating everything
during the 2 month break i realized a lot of the core design, which worked in theory, wasn't exactly fun or what I wanted from the experience and so I'm changing the cities to be structured like they are in VTMB (not to the same depth, more literally in that the level loads a contained section)
Also dungeons to be made wayy more simplified, as cool as it was to have daggerfall style dungeons that worked (it was really cool) gameplay wise those sucked ass, so the next step is to get them in a simple in and out design rather than an actual fucking maze
as a side, i need to figure out more to do for the "life sim" more so coding I have ideas but yeah implementing them will be the goal
>>528309537>removes cool dungeons>replaces it with skryim slop dungeonsPlease please please go back to the old Daggerfall dungeon system or at least provide some clues on where to go so the retard who cant figure it out for himself doesnt get upset. Good lifesim idea though and good job fixing your code.

>>528306192 (OP)Honestly lurk moar before attempting to bake, familliarize with how it's done, I don't get why new friends don't just do this.
>>528309894Im sorry. I tried :(
>>528309789I want to create a fast shooter rpg and the one thing people complain about consistently with daggerfall is that dungeons are labyrinths, they'll still be procedural just the aspect of having a vertical level added way too much complexity without any real fun as an area to shoot guys in
>>528308579And on top of that, alot of /agdg/ is against enginedevving. Hmm... the difference is that of yesdevs and nodevs, even if the only thing yes"devs" are developing is an engine.
>>528309169AGDG is above game jams. Game jams are for total noobs to learn noob lessons. Which is fine if you're at that level. But we are at game demo level. We make game demo's here as the lowest level of recognized contribution, and launch games at the level above that.
>>528310389enginedevs make more, quicker, than more devs here, anyway
>>528310289The biggest problem for navigation is everything looking the same. Same height/length of room, same walls, same lighting, all of these make even simple designs disorienting.
One quick test for this would be to think of it this way, can you stand facing any point in any direction and from just that, know exactly where you are? (as a player, not as the creator deeply familiar with the level). The more "generic corner"s etc you have, the more labrynthine it will feel.
Put in some details and keep a mind for what the structure would actually be used for (besides players running around shooting.)
>>528310389I probably come across as anti engine deving. But really I'm against poor people engine deving. Your goal is to escape. Not to maximize profits or have total control. Your goal is to make a great game that sets you free. Just like I don't think poor people should get a liberal education. College was never meant for poor people to study philosophy. That was meant for rich kids. Somewhere along the long that memo got lost. Now you have useless fucks depressed because spiritually they are awake but serving burgers in hell.

Why are the bochers so creative and insightful?
>>528310679the levels are procedural, i tried adding clutter and stuff to the walls but unless I had resources to create truly unique zones for 1000s of random dungeons it just wasn't working, also the way that random paths work between rooms meant there was a lot of dead area
so instead the base plan is to just make a 3x3 grid that makes a trail with occasional open doors to connecting cells
orange here representing that each cell can be a specialized combat arena

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

it's probably easier to just learn how to draw anime women and then get software to quantize your colors and do automatic dithering
the reason the top right still has pixels visibile is a matter of practicality and time over the artist's skill
consider how the image you posted is over 2000 pixels in height for a single character as opposed to the 2k showing a character image 4 times over, same with why the GBA version looks as it does, it's just the PC-98 method used because resolution is so low

My guess as to why it did well, the overall art of the game is really good. Like the walls, floor, enemies. Good enough to catch the eye of an under served market. I know POE likes exist, but a really nice one is still going to catch the eye of a lot of people. That's just my intuition anyway.
The danger of a game like this is, like x but worse. I might have to buy this to figure out what separates it, if anything, from game like Diablo 1. Or maybe the market is so desperate it doesn't matter.
3D is better for 2D than 2D-based engines.
>>528330195Responding to myself -
I think it was more than just art, I'm just saying some good art goes a long way for a game like this. Gets people to take notice. Then the good reviews come from an enjoyable game. There's not just one simple reason it's selling. Which is obvious, but I don't want to accidently insult the hard work and great game it is by saying it's only art.
>>528330195It might've done better if it was just called "Kalemonvo" or something simple.
>>528330618Are you mad I'm happy a guy did well? Or what's your problem? Fucking cancer.
i'm finally getting close to cracking self hosted gitlab pages. tl;dr this /g/ shit but basically i had to use an A record for top level DNS, individual subdomain (one per gitlab group) CNAME record to dyndns domain, and not use wildcards. and then lets encrypt will work both in the front end proxy-passing nginx and again in the gitlab omnibus you just copy paste the subdomain.crt file into /etc/gitlab/ssl inside the docker image, because gitlab won't use https urls in the html it generates unless it is able to serve https itself, even though it is meant to site behind a proxy passing nginx web portal. now that my dns changes have propogated im this close to getting it to work. and i will have my own homepage driven by pushes to a git repo self hosted working (so i got unlimited storage for offering file downloads just but a 10tb hdd)
i kinda just guessed at cert.pem -> domain.crt, privkey.pem -> domain.key, chain.pem -> domain.key-staging but it finally works... i just had to manually add each subdomain in the proxy passing web portal and assign the correct individual domain specific lets encrypt keys. this was a load of shit to do but i'm glad it is working now.
Ultimately I want my git repo to have a setup.bat that i run and it downloads and installs everything then builds it so on a fresh computer like a work pc I can dev in free time without having to redo compiler and tool setup all the time, so I need permanent direct download links for everything im using. which currently is just msys2 / mingw toolchain so i can run configure make makeinstall on windows because of some of the library dependences are a pain on anything that isnt linux. i know this sounds like dorkshit but i really got sick of having crappy workarounds like a usb stick that i would always forget or couldnt find and just wanted to do it "properly" and for free without using a VPS or a storage limited free github by just self hosting everything i'll every need on my home ip.

Been resisting posting at all until I finished v0 of my game. This is an Ultima 1 inspired... I don't know, mechanics study? Tried to boil down everything its simplest form with no emphasis on content or theme. Basic gameplay loop is walking around bumping into guys to kill them for money. Most tactical complexity comes from waiting a turn without moving with Z to manage your position. You can get a stronger weapon, a ranged one, some magic. Ultimate goal is flying a blimp to the castle in the middle and killing the final boss.

>>528341325A **Brahmin** is a member of the highest caste in the traditional Hindu caste system, which has been historically associated with **priests, scholars, and teachers**.
### Key Points about Brahmins:
1. **Traditional Role**:
* Brahmins were originally **priests and custodians of sacred knowledge**, particularly the Vedas (the oldest Hindu scriptures).
* They often served as **ritual specialists, scholars, philosophers, and advisors** to rulers.
2. **Caste System**:
* In the **varna system** (a fourfold division of society), Brahmins are at the top, followed by:
* **Kshatriyas** (warriors/rulers)
* **Vaishyas** (traders/farmers)
* **Shudras** (laborers/service providers)
* There is also a large number of communities considered **outside the varna system**, often referred to as **Dalits** or formerly โuntouchables.โ
3. **Modern Context**:
* Today, Brahmins are found across India and in the diaspora, involved in a wide range of professions.
* While some still perform religious duties, many are now in fields like **education, administration, technology, and science**.
* The caste system's rigid hierarchy is **officially outlawed** in India, but caste dynamics still influence social and political life in complex ways.
4. **Regional Variation**:
* There are many sub-groups of Brahmins across India, such as **Tamil Brahmins**, **Kashmiri Pandits**, **Maharashtrian Brahmins**, **Bengali Brahmins**, etc., each with their own customs, languages, and histories.
If you're asking in a different context (e.g., in pop culture or in other countries), let me know โ โBrahminโ can sometimes mean different things depending on the setting.

is it worth learning to draw with no experience for the purpose of asset generation in gamedev? i've posted this before but the current state of AI is demotivating.
i could spend a 2 years during my prime to get to a decent level but i still would need to make a game.

Day 22 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Debugging Tutorial Code" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Didn't go to sleep empty handed, finished Fusel's hour long introductory course on Unreal Engine C++ and created both input controlled movement and independent movement for both a cube and sphere object in an empty baseplate using nothing but C++ code. A large part of that was spent debugging code because I had accidently messed the math up but we figured it out eventually, so now both little things are working fine and I think I have learned enough from it. Next up we'll be finishing the other stuff on the Trello besides C++ and assessing what we know. Good thing Fusel still has more courses besides the one I had just completed for Unreal Engine C++, as they're easily my favorite ones to go through.
What is Project C-Con?

scrapped what I had going on with my project, like all of my projects, it got too big from what it originally was. So copied the project, and gutted it to what it was meant to be originally, a space ship auto battler roguelike. I can still use a good amount of the same systems I already had in place, so it should go a lot more quickly with that. Here I just got a basic back and forth auto attack going on, as well as giving the player the option to switch camera angles if they wish, from default, to closer, to 1st person (inside not done), to behind the enemy.

I finally found a good loli design for inspo and regained my motivation.
I just wanted to share a little encouragement. I'm 43 and have been programming professionally since I was 17.
In 2014, I worked crazy hard on a game called Jaxi the Robot to help teach kids to program. You can find it on itch. I tried to market it. I spent a lot of money.
I sold 0 copies. Ever.
But here's the thing... my passion to help others learn, and to build that game led to some great things. It got me the best job of my life. Because of that game, the interviewer gushed about my passion, and hired me on the spot. No coding interviews. None of that. This company went on to get acquired by Microsoft and I spent 7 good years there before heading out for a different adventure.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is. Always be creating. We don't get to choose what "success" looks like. Work on the things that manifest the core of what's inside you. Bring to the world that which you were put on Earth to create. That will move your life to where it should be.
>>528372870Well the main issue is that I have basically no clue how audio in games works to begin with. Like would it be possible to have like a looping waterfall sound and somehow accumulate it for each particle based on their speed and play it at the proper position? I don't really know.
>>528373869sorry I don't listen to losers
>>528373869You made a game that no one asked for and tried to market it to people who don't have the ability to pay you money, retard.
>>528373869How do you sell 0 copies ever? Did your friends and family hate you?
>>528373869My life is made out of similar circumstances. It was never "achieving my initial goal" in itself that brought me success in life but rather some other incidental things that only happened because I have done some things to achieve my goal.
That's why the "I'll make a game and get a girlfriend from it!" posters are so funny to me. That's not how it's going to work bro.
>>528372249I don't know enough about your game to tell you what's actually better.
Simplifying the type chart removes a significant amount of depth by making it easier to always have perfect or near perfect offensive and defensive coverage. This will result in monsters with higher stats being strictly better than monsters with lower stats unless you're very careful with movepools and passive abilities.
Replacing it with case-by-case damage multiplier increases the game knowledge burden on the player, and the pokemon type chart has rare cases that the average player won't remember, like ghost resisting poison.

god i fucking love defold.
i reworked my old jump pad
it had a very cumbersome implementation where it raised the hover height limit, so the player was still expected to jump and hover manually, which proved not to be very intuitive for testers
now it actually raises you automatically as soon as you touch it

>>528378097not my kind of girl
>>528341325>>528353280The actual answer is that when White Aryans conquered the place, they realized the local population was an absolute genetic blackhole and there was no way to uplift them with any amount of interbreeding.
So they put a caste system with strict rule against miscgenation, with them at the top levels and the local populace at the bottom.
Of course across several millennia this proved to be not enough, and the upper castes slowly got pajeetified. Not their differ by the top having 0.02% Aryan ancestry compared to middle caste having 0.01%.
Do not breed the pajeeta. It will effectively end your lineage.

I'm sick of game engines becoming bloated for not particular reason as to add more and more features to retards.
I can't stand godot adding useless BS like screen readers instead of making faster to generate an avatar code.
I don't like other engines, because the engine I want is basically rpg maker but for 2D metroidvanias and beatem ups and action rpgs.
How dificult is to actually learn C++ and use SDL to make my own basic game with it?
>>528396787>AI just means if you were a 10/10 gamedev you're now a 11/10 gamedev.Nah it's the opposite. The lower you are, the more + it gives you, like from 4 to 7 or from 7 to 8, but if you're already a 10 it's not really useful. I only use it for things I have absolutely no idea about, like making bash scripts or python applications for convenience (splitting up images in individual sprites, applying color filters palettes and stuff) even though I don't know any bash or python. When I use it for things that are my specialty I find it gives amateurish answers, which makes sense, it's a "wisdom of the crowd" device, there's more average programmers out there than there are Carmacks so the AI is trained on that.

Also look at Carmack. Thick forearms. He's a judoka who drives sports cars. Good facial development. High IQ. Ya, maybe he's not your Dad who gets shit faced and watched Nascar for 7 hours straight, but he's not that weird.
>>528405628No dude back THEN everything was perfect you dont get it
>>528405816>inlining functions into one vs breaking into smaller functions
>>528406152Carmack is an absolute weirdo, dude, he broke into school with other kids to steal some apple computers using handmade thermite mix on the windows. When the psychologist asked if he'd do it again, he said yes.
(The only reason he got caught was because one of the guys in the group was too fat and got stuck in the window.)
>>528405364uh oh meltie, I accept your defeat
>>528406585"He called me a fag, that makes me the winner." lmfao.
>>528406459That's not weird, that's high IQ behavior. People want to act like the founders were a bunch of trans weirdos like the game industry is today and it's not true. By modern standards these dudes were extremely normal. The non normal features are just that they are smart.
>>528406804no, what makes him a winner is you being retarded. you're honestly too stupid to even realise the other anon's point
>People want to act like the founders were a bunch of trans weirdos like the gamthat's literally not what anyone has said, holy reading comprehension
>>528406214make new thread faggot tranny
>>528406214Weird is perfect.
Carmack is a classic example of a very talented and intelligent human
being that is bent on total world destruction. Incredibly, he has made
millions of dollars getting people hooked on psychotic games where
they compete on the internet to see who can dismember the most people.
I believe there is something morally wrong when millions of people
have computerized murder fantasies, and we have Jon Carmack to thank.
Carmack has used his superior intellect to create mayhem in society.
Many people play games such as quake so much that their minds are
permanently warped. A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months
after he lost a โdeath match' and became catatonic.
>>528407483>A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months after he lost a โdeath match' and became catatonic.uh oh meltie
>>528407042Their whole argument is to say being smart is makes you weird. They are using a fallacy of equivocation essentially. Saying rare, means weird, and weird means what we view as weird now. They are acting like different words are the same thing and then applying these blended definitions to come to stupid conclusions. Hence someone posting ass less pants as proof of weirdness. So you saying I have low reading comprehension is not true, as degenerate works have been put up as proof of weirdness. So fuck you faggot.
I used the example of Age of Empires being made by former straight laced business guys. Someone brought up John C. Just some smart kid that in essentially all ways is a normal guy. He has his own interests, I guess as a child he stole something, but everything "weird" about him is just his intelligence and boldness.
I wish you people just knew when you were around superior minds and would stfu.
>>528405628Imagine making picrel in 1991 and Doom two years later.
>>528407628literally dumber than a brick
>>528407738Ya good response fag. Nice logic. Fucking pussy. This isn't xbox live, you have the opportunity to craft a response, but you can't. Because you're not mentally capable of doing so. So all you can is baselessly insult as a mechanism to protect your fragile fucking ego. If you're this low level perhaps just don't talk shit in the future.
>>528407685>picrel in 1991>Doom two years later
>>528405628John Romero is mixed Mexican-Native American
>>528400854But what about the gameplay, the plot and the ui anon?
>>528406804>That's not weird, that's high IQ behavior. People want to act like the founders were a bunch of trans weirdos like the game industry is today and it's not true. Why is being trans the only flavor of "weird" you know?
I mean yeah trannies are weird but that doesn't make every autist a tranny.
