The PSX version was never difficult outside of the shotgun robot instant kills, the biggest issue with difficulty isn't in the actual combat but in being able to avoid enemies which makes the cave of trials a breeze instead of a gauntlet of attrition like in the original.

The original designs of areas like the mountain palace and cave of trials and the final dungeon literally used the same few rooms copy pasted over and over, the remake actually gives every dungeon a unique layout.
