I paid barely any more for gas in Japan than what I do back home on the west coast. I rented a Nissan Note E-Power, a hybrid that averages over 80 MPG. The average rural Japanese drives a kei car that gets around 50 MPG.

Lol you'd know if you commuted in any large American city that this isn't always possible. Commuting out of Portland I frequently found myself avoiding certain freeways at certain times and going uphill or downhill more than my commute in.
