You've hit one of my favorite chords for lore expansion & exploration. The gist is taking the north and devolving it into a continuous mess with one crises leading into the next until the region is exhausted of any civilized life encroaching.

>1. Over the time the tribal bickering of the Cannibals can (and likely does if not stopped) lead to a unification under the Grand Wizard and a more directed aggression pointed against the humanoid neighbors. This feast first preys upon the vulnerable rebels, eventually pressing onto the borders of the major powers until the war in Bast is forced to an armistice.
>2. If and when the Cannibal invasion is dealt with to completion, especially if the rebels are not consumed beforehand, the area is slowly and haphazardly settled by the dispossessed and opportunists arising in the wake of the greatly diminished Cannibals & rapidly opening real estate. This mission to colonize does not pan out particularly well. As quickly as the residents establish themselves in a meaningful manner deep within the plains the smell of something wrong emerges.
>3. The enthusiasm is replaced with growing doubt and troublesome reports trickling back to the coastal entrypoint. Sickness spreads amongst the populace. The scrambled world salad turns to slurred, confused speech. The frail begin to fall first. Some stay asleep. Some fight to persist. Is it the food? Maybe it's the water? Could it be in the air? We...have to get out of here. Go where? Anywhere? There's no help coming ish dere? I... feel...sho....Hah...
>4. Concern grows to panic. The area must be quarantined. Great evil lives here. And those damnable Hivers gleefully traversing that northern corridor might be responsible...who can say? They certainly never would.
