I crept up to the door, and suddenly, the organ above roared to life. Light exploded through the church, blinding and white-hot, wiping the altar from view. The people were just... gone. So were the arches, the ceiling, everything swallowed in that burning glare. I looked up, eyes scorched, and hanging there in that endless brightness were the black stars. Cold wind from the lake rose and slapped me across my face. Beyond the horizon, past miles of malignant clouds roaring like the sea, I saw the moon, soaked in spray. And beyond it, the towers of Carcosa rose in silence behind.
Death had taken my father long ago, dragged him to that terrible place where lost souls wander. Somehow, only I could still see him for what he was. No one else would recognize him now. His voice rose above it all, ringing and rising, crashing through the blinding light. As I collapsed, the brilliance would not cease. It kept coming in wave after wave, flames licking at me from inside the light.
I fell. Down, deeper and deeper. And in the dark below, I heard him, the King in Yellow, whispering right into my soul:
βIt is a fearful thing to fall through the god-shaped hole.β
