It's fucking crazy to me that if I want to feel some real fucking job fantasy in this game, I have to play PVP instead of PVE.

Want to feel like the SCHs of eld and be a commander directing and supporting its troops?
Go play PVP, because PVE is just a fucking mismatch that lost the sauce long ago and can't simply get nerfed anymore.

Want to feel like Cecil or a FFT DRK and use your own HP to deal damage and steal HP back to survive on the brink of death?

In their haste to create balance for the competitive pve scene, they've smoothed out all the jobs so much that they all lack an identity and are boring to play. Ironically, despite pvp being inherently competitive, the devs don't seem to mind going wild with it and actually having fun. So we get fun jobs with identities.
I think it's because when they fuck up pvp balance, avid pvpers don't blast them hard on social media like raidstreamers do when they fuck up the raiding meta right before a new tier or something. The shitty thing is, if you don't care about savage raiding at all, you still have to suffer with shitty "balanced" jobs that feel like a snoozefest to play, because anytime we get something fun or different or a little bit novel, some autistic parsefag bitches about how it's messing up the meta and then it gets standardized like everything else.

There's plenty of ways to make a tank like this work, the most likely would be something like:
>Sacrifice % HP, but simultaneously get % damage reduction for 5-10 seconds, restores own HP with follow up skills
You could do other things too like make it stagger some damage so the sacrificed health doesn't cause too much spiky damage taken, but if the stagger builds up too far it'd be impossible to self-heal it.
Or naturally high mitigation to make up for sacrificed HP.

Generally the idea with that kind of tank is to give them some kind of bounce-back for sacrificing HP but it's not just an immediate full self heal, it'd be something you plan around that would probably separate the shitty tanks from those who know how to plan ahead for the attacks that are coming.

They seem to be designed around 40 hours of prog, 20 hours of reclears, quite intentionally. I've had this same criticism but I think it flies under the radar because most roles are just copies of each other. Most melee DPS now are just some form of using skills 1/2/3 to build up gauge and go into a hyper mode, burn off all cooldowns, and then reset.

Raiders are the worst thing that ever happened to MMOs. I get the fun in raiding, although I don't do it anymore, but it became such a core of every MMO that it smothered out so much else. The issue is if you expect people to want to reclear for months, much less just play the game for years, you need a strong gameplay loop. Savages are designed reasonably well I think, with ultimates providing a good challenge for those that really crave that, but the foundation of MMO gameplay is the job/class(es) you play as, and if they just balance it so everything is the most average experience for the role, that gets really tiresome over time. It actually impresses me that people can stick to single jobs so much.

it is worth trying, and the free trial lets you hit the lvl cap for where the free expansions end. there is so much story and content to run, i only started in november and am still finding new things to do and having lots of fun. there are new worlds that give you a crazy xp buff if you feel up to lvling a bunch of different jobs, which is what i did to get into the game, since when i first tried it, it didnt stick. if you dont like it, at least you wont pay :3 the game helped me a lot with my social anxiety and got me calling people its been great!! hopefully you can find a similar sense of enjoyment, if you do end up playing.

It's too much work for a dev team that can't even add hats right away, but having variants for each summon phase with cooldowns (ie: go into either Titan or Leviathan phase, one is stronger but in a long fight you'd inevitably be forced to use both) would be really neat to utilize the full theme.
Also, Alexander could be a time mage styled utility summon.
