IMO it's all in the design. If you use a character with a toony design like Wolf ofc people won't take grim anthro animal content seriously.
However if you create a design like the Michigan Dogman, but a little smoother IMO people could take it seriously.
Take the Michael Bay's transformers designs for example. Many classic fans find them to be tasteless, however the general public prefers them over the Gen one designs.
I simply think the industry doesn't want to innovate and that's why they haven't tried
