It's really not, its always going to be a part of a fandom but it only really comes to the surface in the face of extreme popularity (which means there's already enough non horny discussion) or the fandom is near death (in which case all other avenues of discussion have been exhausted). Take XCOM for example, you may hate the vipers but they're one of the last things propping up content creation and discussion for the series.
