I was introduced to FF7 first, so I was a little saddened to see how derivative it was, but arguably it refines the Eva formula and does it better.
Eva has the Male-Female-Female pairing, where there's two ambiguous love interests, one dies, and the other travels into the goo-world to mind-bond with the hero. This is where Cloud-Aerith-Tifa pairings come from.
There's a reason why the Aeirth-Tifa debate is as big as the Rei-Asuka one, it's because it was based on it. Interestingly, Tifa physically resembles Misato much more, and Tifa has that motherly relationship with Cloud that Misato has rather than the bratty awful Asuka.
