So Cloud 'at Neibelheim', but still got ganked too early to be there to try and save Tifa.

Anybody acting out of character, even if it's the result of horrific trauma at a literal alien invasion, would be under immediate suspicion. Jenova is dead and just a corpse. FF7 took inspiration from The Thing and there's a similar sequence where they capture a dead Thing and turns out it has residual life signs and partially comes back to life.

Jenova as a proper entity was killed 2000 years ago at great personal expence by the Cetra. It's entirely possible Sakaguchi would go mad with enough time, but I think it's clear he was a good creative and project leader at Square. For FF7, he created many of the overall concepts like midgar and then was the producer for the game, keeping the other writers and artists in line.

Without The Spirits Within disaster, he would be a major exec at Square, possibly even CEO, but more likely just head of R&D. Someone with real game and story backgrounds is badly needed at Modern Square, which is mostly a bunch of Keiji Inafune get rich quick scheme style executives who don't have an eye for good games or stories. It's why Square is so lost and listless right now.

I feel Sak would have ensured that FF7 remake would be more faithful to the original and keep Nomura, Kitase, and Nojima, in line.

I've been making this case since day 1. Square seems to naively assume that either everyone has played FF7, or they are fine playing FF7 after remake series. But I'd wager 75% of players to the Remake series are totally new, and thus the games overall story seems utterly incomprehensible to them. They should have just made 1:1 adaption.

"Anime" wasn't "anime" back then. FF7 massively borrows the story, aestetics and especially humor from 90s tv anime shows so it feels like an anime in game form. Combat was a bit more grounded partially because they were still trying to emulate live action films/tv, and because the cel animation led to more stileted movement. More fluid action required more budget and they often didn't have that.

The shaky cam characters jumping all over the place is a 00's phenomenon. Shows try to up the ante to stand out with bigger and bigger feats. 3D allows for more camera angles, and more movement.

The thing that "works" for FF7 is Cloud's journey, Tifa, Aerith, Shinra, and the side-cast. What resonates are their personal stories and journeys. Seph is okay as an antagonist and someone that Cloud at first admired as a model, then had to overcome. But outside of Cloud I don't care about Seph.

If I were to do sequels, I'd probably have entirely new characters with cameos from the original cast. Cloud and Tifa are semi-retired adventurers, (with kids!), and Cloud runs a sword fighting school. The new characters would roam the world and have their own problems to confront in the post-Meteor world.

2. His motives seem all over the place, and likely subject to rewrites so the game feels it's contradicting itself.
3. His first motives seems to be revenge as an Ancient, but then he isn't one after all because Jenova actually KILLED the ancients. Then he has this God-trip bullshit.

I think he's a strung together villain, filling a role, but his deeper motives were made up as they went, and subject to several re-writes so it's messy as hell.

As you said, he only has a few scenes. He changes motivations accordingly, because in one scene he labors under a misapprehension of who he and Jenova are, and then later he is freed of that.
It's one motivation change, man. It's not "all over the place". When he was raving after a week of no food or sleep, he thought he was an Ancient and had claim to the planet. Then Cloud stabbed him in half, he spent five years learning how wrong he was in the Lifestream, and decided "fuck it, humans just suck actually, I'm gonna become God and make a better planet".
