"Used to be a town up here."
"What, back before us white people showed up?"
"No, dumbass, I'm not *that* old. Anyway, I was on the other coast back then. No, it was like, back in the 60s, 70s, I guess. Loggers mostly, but also some engineers & shit from the dam upriver.
"Between the enviros, fast growing biotech tree-farm shit from Georgia and Alabama, and the Russians dumping Siberian lumber on us after the war, the loggers just kinda gave up. After the dam got decommissioned, back, I dunno, turn of the century? Everybody else left. You can still see some of the old house foundations, back behind the berm over there."
"You used to live here?"
"A boyfriend did. Until the local pastor convinced him our kind were demons or some shit. Married a local round-ear. Nothing personal. Married a local girl, had four or five kids. Probably moved back to Oly after this place shut down.
"That's about when I gave up on the backwoods shit. Considered going back home, mom has a place up in Vermont. But Seattle's easier, I guess."
"You OK?"
"No. Probably shouldn't've come out here. C'mon, let's head back down."
