I didn't like mecha as a teen. Dunno it felt dry to me, just like political shows. TTGL and NGE were the first ones I enjoyed but I considered them exceptions, it took a good while till explicitly got into it, mostly thanks to many original anime with male casts being mecha and the specular fuel they provided that was fun to discuss.
The gay transformer comics from the mid 10s were the last push I needed to become a fullblown mecha fag.
