when I was a teenager I worked at a bbq restaurant that had a group of like 20 something Taiwanese people visiting and it was their first american restaurant. when the owner found out he gave them tons of free sides and comped everything except their main meals. he was going to give everyone novelty texas ten gallon hats but only had 10 on hand (we gave them out during birthdays) so didnt because he "didnt want to cause drama". when the food was brought out he came out with the waiters and loudly proclaimed "welcome to america" and the whole restaurant cheered

ever since then I have thought we are pretty welcoming to foreigners unless you are here illegally
