Hadrian, one of the greatest pagan religious innovators, fought a tiresome battle in which he did not sign his despatches with the customary 'I am well and so are my men', because they lost entire legions and a couple of battles. Romans were highly tolerant of other cultures, forced conversion is unheard of unless people were doing something insane with their gods like genocide. They deemed this religion had to be wiped off the planet for the safety of humanity as it would threaten all men some day. Today we follow it.
Those Christians slaughtered were also not Roman. They were black bearded Jews. Romans did not start converting until much later.

romans had a word for jews
'monstrum'.
it means an evil omen, a sign of disfavour from the gods. they never conduct war without the gods.
