The allies are actually really cool in ronin. I bet a lot of people don't even know this but every ally has at least one unique martial skill that isn't available to the player and you have multiple allies that either use completely unique styles or even unavailable weapons.

Shame we never got an update or DLC that let us use them without allies tho
