Some of Tenna's dialogue imply that Toriel and Asgore regularly got into fights(and it's something Kris was traumatized by too). They probably would've divorced even without the Dess incident.
In other words, divorce was good. If they didn't divorce the violence would've escalated until Kris became a school shooter.
