They're hybridizing the game portrayals with the comics. I can see him being Mardu, but acting like he's still being portrayed as an emotionally unstable wreck is just stupid. When he's been given a moment to think, he's dangerously calculated. The dude has enslaved entire planets before the heroes have even acted.

That's counterintuitive to what he does. Eggman's plans often go to shit because he half-researches the outside forces he wants to exploit, so he tries to weild them without fully understanding them. He's a genius, but he doesn't value intelligence for the sake of it, just valuing what he can use to achieve his plans.
