I expected SDG to be more like "cute goth mommy with a flog has some fun with you" and less "have your skin peeled off and then be thrown into a vat of acid while still alive. Act II SDG is mostly that second analogy.

That's not that crazy. Any L1 arcane spellcasting character can still use monster summoning wands, which in OG BG1 are SUPER powerful, and even in vanilla BG:EE they're good enough to get you through the game without too much struggle. I actually managed to solo BG:EE Legacy of Bhaal difficulty in the vanilla install by abusing wands of fire, wands of monster summoning and the occassional Web/Stinking Cloud/Cloudkill.
