There are a lot of references to events and people in the Pillars games. They lifted at least one character from a side quest in PoE 2 to Avowed. They are also keeping consistent with Pillars lore from what I have seen so far. But the feel of the game is not very Pillars-like if you will. Time skip with you being an awakened soul of the watcher. Avowed can be the series that sets up the events between Deadfire and POE3.

I’d honestly rather they move away from the watcher. I think their story is done and I believe Josh Sawyer wanted a new protagonist for Deadfire but was told to keep it the same. They can also easily kill off the watcher through the plot and have a time skip of 15-20 years for the new soul body to grow up but who knows.

First thing to know is that 'Core' is what other games call 'Very Hard' or something. So as a new player you should play on Normal, and it won't be babby mode (until you start really mastering the mechanics, but even still there will be surprises.)

Pretty much anything is viable on Core (with knowing the system and not making retarded decisions), so everything is viable on Normal.

Just pick what you think is cool. You'll be better off if you pick a lane and stick to it: shooty arrow, sword+board, dexy rogue, specific element sorcerer, wizard focused on CC, hit things with big weapon, etc.

It should be pretty obvious what feats/stats to lean into, but on Normal (even on Core) you have some leeway, if you end up taking a feat or whatever that isn't useful later it isn't a big deal.
So just pick what you think is cool, it's really fine.

2nd sleep, actually Enchantment is pretty good in general as lots of demons have shit Will saves.
Sometimes it's also a matter of piling on debuffs. I respec'd Woljif as Shadowcaster and that Blinding Ray is really badass, blind is very nice. Stun, sleep, hold (won't get hold monster until later though), Slumber hex, all good. Evil Eye their attacks.
Generally, don't just run up and attack with your face, try to land debuffs. If none of your team can land debuffs, then consider if some of you've made some of your team a little redundant (too many melee for instance). Someone who can reliably disable a set of enemies, or land Slow, or whatever, is easily as important as, say, a 3rd front person.

Make sure you're taking advantage of Ulbrig's wis->AC by being unarmored. Give him Mage Armor and whatever else (barkskin, blur, displacement, whatever.) He can be an absolute beast in melee.

If you have to, try to manipulate turn combat with smart positioning so they're advancing into your party (getting one attack off at most), then you get to retaliate next turn with multiple full attacks.

Shouldn't be the case. For example if you're fighting 5 of them, and land Slow on even like 3. That is a major change of course for the battle. Drop that summoned Azata snake people from the cup on top of them so they're engaged, come up to flank and combat's gonna basically be over.
If you mean the buffs, you don't need to buff everyone and the minute/levels will last you quite a lot of encounters. Just throw down the round/level buffs like Displacement if things are a bit dicey and then only on frontliners.
Shouldn't need to blow your whole spell load on every encounter or even every map honestly.

This describes a lot of the writing so far. So much of the dialogue is written expecting me to just go along with the "good guy option". I haven't looked into how much of the writing team for this was involved in PoE, but the writing really does feel a lot more childish, a good choice of word, than anything in PoE. What I run is 3 str 8 dex 3 agi 3 con 6 per 10 will 7 int hybrid thought control versatility with chem guns and every stat up on dex for versatility to kick in. Anything under 10 will can have it pretty rough with no locus of control making you immune to lose your turn effects and 10 will is enough to 1 shot everything in the game with max tier gear so you end with high dex that you then buff
Some stat thresholds are:
30 dodge just so you can take escape artist
Always max stealth
Lockpicking and hacking will vary by character for mine 36 lockpick and 55 hacking can open almost everything with all buffs
Pickpocket is kind of hit 50 effective or you get nothing out of it
Mechanics you probably want at least 70 points on most builds
Electronics at least 88 points for the best energy shields
Chemistry you don't need that high unless you run chem guns but if you do you want to hit 151 effective with all buffs
Biology caps at 50 if you have heavy duty dlc because with gear from it and base game y9u can craft everything
Tailoring 102 crafts maxed out dlc gear
Persuasion you only need like 20 points at most to buff to pass all checks
You can pass all intimidation checks with gear with 0 points in the skill
You want 95 buffed mercantile to unlock every shop this is usually doable from 45 if you get a random event or 65 if you don't

He's under "Additonal." If they went to him and asked him to flesh out so portion of the world or even if they had used previously written but unused notes from him, that would count. Josh is pretty straightforward and truthful (one might even call him "autistic") so I'd take his word generally. Sometimes he can be a bit overly-humble but I don't get that vibe here.

Ultimately I think what makes a CRPG is if character builds are actually an essential critical part of gameplay and the player has to do at least some math or consideration. You get into action game territory when player-skill can beat any challenge regardless of character-skill, or you get into slop-game territory where your character-skill can be absolutely abysmal but any moderate level of player input will allow you to breeze through the game. By these metrics you can eliminate Oblivion but include Morrowind and VtMB. I haven't played Avowed so I can't speak on how it stands up to this test.

You should play it some time to realise why you are wrong. You need certain skill values in Morrowind to do various things, like casting spells, opening locks or using stealth. You can't join factions left and right without a care in the world, like in younger Elder Scrolls games. The fear mongering about full voice acting is silly. Owlkek as seen has a bigger budget and won't gimp the dialogue. People forget there are previous CRPGs which had full VO like DAO, POE2 and had good amounts of dialogue.

Nope, there is an icon on the right of the screen that tells you the level of awareness a certain faction has in an area, so for example if you set a trap in the middle of SGS they'll instantly know it was you who did it when someone steps over it. If you go to more secluded areas you can indirectly kill enemies with things like traps or gas grenades, but attacking someone directly will always result in hostility from a faction, and this is permanent.

Once he gets spell slots for level 6, Woljif ranks up to a full BAB rogue given you can have him pop transformation before any significant fight or even during with a rod of quickening. He can self proc master shapeshifter via animal aspect, and gets decent utility at every level of spellcasting. He can provide greater invis and even use 1-6 quicken rods for instant enervates/wracking rays to soften up targets. Saves don't matter on these, he only has to beat SR and most mythics will help him with that. He can also outright kill several low str/dex mobs with rogue ability damage feats, especially if these stats were already damaged.

depending on build and goals, mythic finesse might not even be needed. By the time Cam starts dishing out respectable damage, she'll have a number of ways to buff her STR up. She'll still use her Dex for AB which will be higher, but you'll only be missing out on 5-6 damage per hit by letting STR factor into it.
Cam gets big benefits from so many mythic feats and abilities that it's worth asking yourself if it's worth it for your build compared to the abundant casting and enduring lines, second spirit or master shapeshifter.

Totally. I started pleasantly surprised and impressed with the game, but I can mark the exact point that started changing, and really just declined until I didn't even finish Act3.
It was when I worked up my nerve to just completely "go for it" and jump down the hole. A feeling of excitement, knowing that we could be well in over our heads but there's no turning back now.
Except yeah just like fucking fast travel to the grove or anywhere if you want. But anyhow, it's understandable, it's very much a game to lure "casual" players and in that regard it is a massive success without question.
Doubt I'll ever play it again myself, though.

As far as games of the genre goes, it's way up there and I'd consider it quite the major success. Is it BG3? No, but so what? BG3 isn't Call of Duty, who cares? I don't want every game Larian-ized honestly, that would become exhausting and dull.

I think the reception was just weird and unfortunate, partly due to switching to fucking literal who site "Fig", after a historically successful funding (went from not sure it would be funded to full funding in 24 hours) on Kickstarter. Especially back in the time when the whole idea of kickstarter was new.
I'm sure it had nothing to do with Feargus's financial interests with Fig...

So I think part of the trouble it had was lower early engagement. And so you get a ripple effect, of someone not sure they want to bother with this weird Fig site, then some loud voices are like "Don't bother, it's all pirates, awful game."
And to be fair, another big issue was that the main quest does suck. They tried something unconventional and it's sort of meh. You're caught between feeling like you need to rush and having all this side content.
Though, one could say the same about going to Spellhold... I'm not exactly sure what the difference is though, because they feel different. I'll have to think about that.

Ramble aside, I disagree that it 'barely made waves,' at least when talking specifically about the CRPG genre. Talking about games in general? No point, every game other than BG3 is a massive failure then.

Joran Vhane on Unfair, cuz I think OwlCunt made him immune to Grease, and it's hard-coded, so you can't even dispel his immunity.

Ghoul Pit in Drezen Fortress. On Unfair this is one of the most annoying fights in the game. The Hunters will ALWAYS focus the Knight Commander, no matter what. The only solution is to either 1) CC them, 2) Blind them all, 3) Have a KC with an AC of at least 60 by late Act II, 4) remain invisible for the entire fight.

Basically, the entirety of Act II is fucking miserable on the higher difficulties. You have limited resources and your level isn't high enough to get everything you need out of the companions available to you unless you meticulously plan everything from the start, and/or run mercenaries. It's easily the most annoying part of the base game.

I think the issue is the last statement I made -- there are a lot of enemies that employ techniques which basically don't have a counter available to the player. Ghost of Ashburry Homlet is a great example, since it's a fight that really shouldn't be taken until Act III, but you're forced to do it in Act II severely under leveled and under geared if you want Sadistic Game Design. An enemy immune to death effects, poison, movement-impairing, mind-influencing, paralysis, negative energy, and has +20 saves across the board to boot. Oh, and is an 18th level spell caster. And has backup with comparable immunities and damage output.

And you're L7. *Maybe* L8.

Vescavor Swarms require AoE energy damage to defeat efficiently which you probably have a limited number of, and ideally negative energy at that, or immunity to sonic attacks -- which you won't have unless you rolled a bard, hired a merc, or butchered a pre-existing character into a shitty bard (instead of a skald, which is vastly superior *except* to provide immunity to sonic attacks).

Gargoyle cave is an encounter that you'll either be L6 for (if you don't cheese the experience game settings) or barely L7 for. On Unfair, the gargoyle high clerics have access to seventh level spells, can deal 50+ points of AoE negative energy per cast, and are basically immune to CC spells with the exception of Hypnotic Pattern, which you can't cast unless you've got a L7 mage, and even if you *can* cast, they're rocking a +13 Will save, which means they're gonna make their save unless they roll low, even with a Court Poet AND optimized Nenio in the group.

I certainly get what OwlCat was going for, but fuck me there's a LOT of bullshit in Act II. The player better have an airtight battle strategy for 80% of the fights if they do Hard/Unfair or your going to be a slave to the dice, which is always frustrating.

When you do, you're gonna make a serious team that can tackle such encounters, and very likely go prepared.
The add ghosts do no damage at all with death ward, the only threat left is one or two casts of high level spells and a pit, these can be dealt with in a multitude of ways.
The last challenge is adding up enough AB to actually hit the boss.
I think it's a great fight. Forces you to get your shit together and go in with a plan, and basically it's the game's way of teaching you to think, make use of class tools, and consumables.
The Duality of conjuration really shines there.

You can cheese the ghost by summoning a bunch of skeletons, retreating to the start of the map and have him waste all his spells on your summons. Make you sure you cast protection from electricity communal on the skellies, because the ghost sometimes likes to cast stormbolts and this can 1 shot your undead horde. After that you can even rest right there and do it again, the ghost doesn't get his spell slots back and he'll be forced to just use corrupting touch.

I get that doing this whole thing is just cheesing the fight, but it's a bullshit enemy for the point of the game where you face him at, and the worst part is his boss area is locked behind a 30+ PER check, so if you're going for SGD you're not even guaranteed you'll even get to fight the damn thing before chapter 3.
