I might be getting details wrong, but James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter start fucking with Snape because he is a Slytherin, and he was close to Lily, who James was into. You could say (and people mostly say it to justify it) that it was deserved because Snape was turning into a death eater, but he was becoming one because being a Slytherin is being a pariah to all other houses, so might as well become a death eater and be accepted somewhere and not be bullied in isolation by James and his buddies. Some of the shit they did to Snape is insane like Sirius almost getting him killed by baiting him into going out during the full moon so werewolf Remus chases him. James and his friends are just dickheads but I guess Remus and Sirius at least get more time for us to like them but James is just a jerk and Peter is a rat(lol) who got James and Lily killed.
