Toei is definitely important. It's good to be aware of the general nature and identity of otaku culture and history. But the idea of a great rift between old Toei and Mushi is not only exaggerated (as far as I know it was a small industry that shared staff and even some ideals despite the clashing methods, that simply fused with a strong inclination towards Mushi, overshadowing Toei's legacy which mattered to the industry even if not to fans) but also greatly impoverishing. Those old Toei works were really good, and there's no need for a fan of anime in 2025 who is already open-minded enough to get into older works to fall into all of the same trappings as an old otaku. In fact we can better judge their legacy now, not just as a strand that got fused into otaku anime but as a predecessor to old Sanrio and ultimately Ghibli. I'm aware I'm arguing against a certain otaku cultural 'patriotism' and nostalgia, that even I might feel sometimes, but I think it's worth to do.
