The reason was to encourage higher rated players to come and play with lower rated guys without fear of losing elo. But unfortunately it either creates a loophole for cheaters(unrated games do not count as cheating on lichess so no one would get banned for cheating in them) or encourages paranoia(cheaters could be here, he thought...). It's time to let it go, I think. Anyone not liking it can thank fagmixer, who ruined it for everyone, just like he ruined thread challenges
