It's the lack of permanency, really. Megas are the only gimmick that both significantly changes a Pokemon's design and that you can use basically whenever you want, making them more on-par with Alternate Forms like Giratina Origin or Kyurem Black/White as far as being a part of your team is concerned
>Z-Moves are super nukes that, outside of some Pokemon-specific flourishes, have no personality
>Dynamax/Gigantimax are mostly just "Pokemon but bigger" and are exclusive to specific areas, making them much less personable than Megas
>Terastal is just temporarily putting a funny hat on your Pokemon based on its type, which is kind of stupid looking and makes it very impersonal. This is further compounded by the lack of unique Terastal forms, with Ogrepon and Terapagos being the only ones to get one
Hell, this even extends to stuff like the anime. You can have Mega Pokemon around as separate characters with their own distinct personalities, whereas you can't with Gigantimax or Terastal forms
