That they got married late doesn't mean they didn't have sex. People in the past did not have BC but they did have home remedies and they knew about pulling out. It also used to be a lot more common to pass unwanted newborns off as your mom's or older sister's if necessary to keep your decent image alive. Historical clothing was not figure hugging and you were supposed to hide a pregnancy in the first place so there was more leeway there.
