The early 2010s is when a lot of game "journalists" were trying to elevate games as an art form in order to make their dead end career paths more respectable. That's why we got things like Adam Sessler's "gut punch of misogyny" and Jason Shrier calling the sorceress from Dragon's Crown loli-bait. They all saw Japanese games as juvenile because they were still being made by people who wanted to make games fun.
