The game is ultimattely gothic romance, and them staying separated won't really address their problems of being unhappy.
Ashley got worse once Andrew rejected her, it's just that during their separattion, she's had nothing to live for, nothing to fight for, so she lived on autopilot of misery and depression.
Andrew coming back to her, leaving the door open, but not really elaborating where they stand lit a fire in her, and she's been falling back on her manipulative tricks as Leyley(which she admittedly isn't proud of), just to find a way to salvage their relationship.
Andrew, for his part, is still hurt over the Nina thing, it damaged his trust in Ashley, damaged his ability to be intimiate with others, and made his psyche and sexuality very fragile(the dreams show he associated his firrst time with Julia with thinking back to Nina's death as well as developing interest in Ashley).
He doesn't want that to also be damaged, so he keeps Ashley at a distance because he doesn't trust her, and she hasn't done anything to alleviate this, especially now, when she's trying to wrestle their relationship by brute forcing a solution without a real consideration for their own happyness, since she believes he was happy when they were kids.
