That may be so, especially before the new guard, and no, I don’t diminish all of his wins at 168. Two things: the amount of other weight bullies compared to Benaburger was most likely low, because 168 lbs was pretty much the most that those guys could make back then. Maybe Gavril could be considered “heavier” for 168 seeing as how he’s been at 175 recently and actually managed to drop Burgervidez (not hurt, just drop), which no other opponent at 168 has managed to do.
Second, I am not throwing out all of his wins. Maybe against some of the bums/sparring partners of other boxers like J’Leon Love and Ronald Ellis aren’t as favorable as his wins since then have been, but he really was nigh-unstoppable at 168 (besides the weight bullying) and those wins are impressive. Not unifying in the span of 10 years is sad, though, and a legitimate knock on him historically.

He should’ve fought for it then, even when Canelita had his WBC belt. All of them, even. He was probably scared of a rehydration clause or something.
