China has bizarre tastes. They're edgelords but ALSO want colorful spectacle where everyone is dressed like a drag queen. Out of all these posters, Aquaman looks the most like he stepped out of a gacha game. I also assume there's some reverse-weebism going on. People assume foreign films are deeper than they are because the cultural assumptions embedded into the writing have been flipped around. Whereas actually nuanced writing doesn't pass through translation as well.

I'd actually say the rise of the Chinese and international markets is the driving force behind capeslop turning into what it is. And why a more refreshing, genre-authentic movie like Superman completely flopped internationally.
