Out of all these posters, Aquaman looks the most like he stepped out of a gacha game. I also assume there's some reverse-weebism going on. People assume foreign films are deeper than they are because the cultural assumptions embedded into the writing have been flipped around. Whereas actually nuanced writing doesn't pass through translation as well.

I'd actually say the rise of the Chinese and international markets is the driving force behind capeslop turning into what it is. And why a more refreshing, genre-authentic movie like Superman completely flopped internationally.

Eh, I disagree and presumably a lot of American audiences are with me here. The costumes and sets in Aquaman look overdesigned--again very much like a gacha game--and there's so much CGI that none of the actors look like they belong in the scenes. Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and At World's End are more pleasing ocean-centric blockbusters to my eye.

Superman had lots of bold color as well but--aside from the antimatter river scene--has a much more classic, pop-art look. The movie is shot to emphasize its colorful costumes rather than smearing them with water filters.

It doing better domestically is far more important as the studio gets a better cut of the profits, and the word of mouth so far is better than I think (correct me if I'm wrong) any film we got from the DCEU, particularly Snyder's which always collapsed into the 2nd week. There's also the matter of it surging HBO Max subscriptions and reviewing exceptionally well which should with some luck translate to more box office enthusiasm for the next films. Even if it only manages to barely scrape its budget back, I can't imagine execs are going to be disappointed when most people seem pretty optimistic at the least for what's next to come.

Everything now depends on how good Supergirl and Clayface is.

A lot of Americans feel that everything and everyone has become too cynical and edgy for a country that's historically been more optimistic. Superman presents its title character as an ideal who accomplishes great feats and inspires others with his unwavering resolve to do good. It's not his strength or intelligence that makes him a hero, but his values.
