I think even the Bigfoot explanation is plausible, albeit minus the supernatural stuff. Gorillas were considered mythical animals until circa 1865. Mostly every continent has some large ape, so why not North America? Every animal evolves with some special skill. What if this ape evolved to hide? Maybe it looks like a tree, so you could be standing right next to it and not notice it's there. Maybe it can turn into a patch of grass and let you walk over it without reacting.
