I addressed this in /omg/ but I might as well bring it here.
It feels to me like magic has experienced its own version of the "God of the Gaps" argument over the years. Originally magic was a very widespread feature that could manage just about anything from healing livestock to finding and punishing a thief, and from stealing milk to fighting witches who steal milk.
Now it's all just manipulation of coincidence, and only acceptable within the realms of the real world. Reality has become too hard and finite for any real fuckery. It's all so disappointing and limiting.
I'm not asking to cast fireball here. But I am wondering why I can't make a Bag of Holding, cast a werelight, or create the ILLUSION of a fireball hurtling at a person's head.
I worry that magic is dead, and the only thing left is the insistence that coincidences are significant.
