it's really not that clear. there are reasons there has been so much debate on the issue. for instance, someone was put to death for gathering sticks to make a fire, after which a further commandment was given to remain in their dwellings for the duration of sabbath.
and it isn't just rest, we are supposed to focus on God, not simply do as we please. even animals, servants, and foreigners within their borders were required to rest. so there is some deep symbolism here, not just "woohoo day off", you know? we rest on the seventh day because God did, that's what is in the text.
for the orthodox, the forbidden activities are the 39 melachot, which are acts related to the building of the tabernacle. this is all from the oral torah mind you. but even karaites who reject the oral torah still have a lot of debate about how to keep sabbath, what is allowed, etc. some karaites use electricity, some do not.
