40k has some nuance but it's extremely minor and surface level stuff, specifically because the setting is supposed to exist so you put your own little guys and make your own little stories with them, the setting is just a nice thematic blueprint on top. Personally I just dislike 40k's current direction because it's activly walking towards "yuh huh bolter porn imperium good epic hero" capeslop shit instead of "misery porn everyone sucks and everyone is a lunatic in space" shit. If I wanted cool heros beating aliens I would be a 8yo watching Clone Wars, the whole point of 40k is being a different setting filled with crazy off the top people and not just generic stoic cool guy personality marines. It's why inquisition stuff and the imperium's inner workings is some of the best atmosphere this setting has and how Dan Abnett ruined it with his Eisenhorn series. It's also why Guilliman replacing the high lords was the worst thing possible
