Mara is one of many instances of megatens popularity ouroborosing itself and imo negatively affecting the media itself. Gundam goes through a very similar thing constantly and its equally as annoying.
In SMT2 mara actually tempts you in his quest and the most they do for a dick joke is that his attack says "Mara went for the throat", and you could even argue whether that was intentional because I think thats just one of the generic ability messages demons can do in SMT when they're using a non spell physical move.
His penis design was based on the buddhist pun but it wasn't his entire being.
But then of course, he became an iconic demon for his scandalous design. Everybody knows "that penis chariot demon" from SMT. So they capitalise on it, every time he appears now hes just nothing but a regurgitation of dick jokes over and over and over. His quests pay mere lip service to any real buddhist mara mythology. His daughters will never appear EVER. Theres some other demons who have been affected this way, where the meta perception of the character eclipses the actual mythology and becomes all the character is reduced to in all appearances to a sickly extent
