Yamai came up with V, so if Kaneko stayed at Atlus they both would have written the game. I think V would be no different than it is now overall, just with more schizo flavor and occultism. VV has that but it's subtle. You won't see it unless you look for it and read the world lore which is boring. People don't want to read about an occult club that meets in the basement of the high school, you want to see them do backrooms summoning like the one you can walk into in Nocturne and then do a quest to get them out of trouble after a few of them are killed. That's fun. Every time V had the opportunity to do something fun with its world building, it decided not to. Instead the most interaction you get with the occult club is doing a short quiz with a nameless npc you never see again.

Mara is one of many instances of megatens popularity ouroborosing itself and imo negatively affecting the media itself. Gundam goes through a very similar thing constantly and its equally as annoying.
In SMT2 mara actually tempts you in his quest and the most they do for a dick joke is that his attack says "Mara went for the throat", and you could even argue whether that was intentional because I think thats just one of the generic ability messages demons can do in SMT when they're using a non spell physical move.

I will say that the law ending of SMT 2 has a lot nuance and relations to esoteric Christian ideas that are being skipped on, in a sense it reminds me of VALIS. If you take it literally then I think there is a lot that you miss about it. But there is the idea that God is becoming us through Christ, and that the closest one can be to God is to not perceive God at all since there is no illusory barrier between you and God. And Eden in SMT 2 is essentially that, you kill the false conception of God, so that those in Eden will have the very real connection of God expressing Itself through them as instead of this conception of a distant being. The whole genocide thing is a representation of spiritual purification, so that only the highest aspect of oneself can stand, and even the false conception one has of the Highest is judged and purified. Again, since there is no conception of evil in New Eden it cannot spread, you’ve created a society that is perpetually free from evil. As those in New Eden populate it, those who died ok earth reincarnate as the purified versions of themselves in New Eden. It’s a fool proof plan that may look horrible, until you remember that reincarnation is canon in SMT and in any other way people would be locked in a cycle of suffering and death and rebirth.

I like the calendar system in p3 because the game was clearly created entirely around the idea.
You're given a clear forshadow that you have a year to make the most of your life before you die, spend that time how you will. But what happened to the calendar system is a very common thing you will see in a lot of game series. They kept on including the feature not because they had an idea for a game to shape it around, they kept on including it because the previous game had it so the next one has to have it to right? Even if it makes less and less sense.
Like persona 5's calendar system is so comically shoehorned in and unnatural for the story. Every month you conveniently get into a new situation with a new villain of the month whos gonna get you.... any minute now. But not now. In a few weeks, just enough time for you to stop them but still feel threatened. P3 and P4's dungeon cycles were based around natural phenomena like the moon and the weather so you can buy it without any real eyebrow raising

I really don't think the hate for calendar system is justified, it feels more like hate by association because its "personas thing", or because existing example makes some people think it can ONLY be done poorly. I can think of a ton of ways in which a calendar system could genuinely enrich a non persona megaten title, but you just have to:

Nobody really shits on devil survivors calendar system, because I'd argue it was mostly successful in those former things and its also super short
One type of story/game that I think could really play off a calendar system type thing is a elaboration on the idea of the opening of SMT1. A setting that starts off with the regular contemporary thing but society starts to slowly fall apart. A lot of megaten titles will create some sort of hard divide between the contemporary part and the apocalyptic setting.
In SMT1 the nuke falls, ending society in a flash and you're sent 30 years into the future into the apocalypse. In Nocturne the conception turns the contemporary world into the vortex world. V goes for a persona type thing where you jump back and forth between the contemporary setting and the other world repeatedly throughout the game.
But I think it would be so cool to have a game where the transition from society to apocalypse is happening literally throughout the entire game, gradually. You see it all crumble in real time and live through it. Its not a quick apocalypse brought by the hammer of god or anything, it IS the game.
I think being able to see the gameworld and setting around you constantly change until by the end its completely unfamiliar and gone to shit would be so cool.

Got the chance to play more Raidou and finished chapter 7. I have to say, the writing around the Lord Takagi thing is actually weirder than I heard about. They outright say that he's not going to be harmed by the curse but apparently it's about being spit on by the Kunitsu than it is about any actual danger to Lord Takagi. It's much less dire and made me think "why am I doing this is he's not even going to die?" when in the original it was way more of a problem. Also makes less sense for Sadakichi to even be involved since he's just a Navy spy and not directly affiliated with the Yatagarasu from what I understood. Couldn't they have called Lord Takagi a naval captain instead of just making him some god in the Yatagarasu? What a shoddy rewrite, even I want to pick it apart.
