Old Japanese fantasy was inspired by western fantasy and then filtered through a Japanese perspective. As Japan has become increasingly more insular again (barring some catastrophic missteps like FF taking inspiration from fucking Game of Thrones) they simply cannibalize their own ugly as shit exaggerated faux-modern style, which is why JRPG protags these days dress in shorts and hoodies and every setting is just modern Tokyo with a few out of place elements.
