The difficulty in writing male leads is that you have to strike a balance to avoid alienating half of your potential fanbase. A lot of people would refuse to engage with the story if the male lead was forward and bold and generally red-blooded, because they'd be totally unable to relate to that due to being shy and timid in their teen years. Likewise, if you write your male lead to be hopelessly awkward and unable to talk normally to girls, you'll alienate people who can't relate to being such a loser.

All RPG protagonist are an insertion of the player because you're literally interpreting the role of the protagonist. However, in the past the protagonists of RPGs had a well-defined design which give it a personality in itself. Also not all protagonists used to be silent and still had cool designs. Modern Self-Insert are as bad and generic as possible because they don't want the mythical modern audience for anime to feel threatened if the protagonist is cooler than then, and their designs represent exactly that being non-descriptive as possible. In the OP character's case Falcom deliberately even noted their intention to make Adol Christin's design "generic" and not overdesigned; This is in contrast to nearly other Falcom protagonist from the 80s, 90s and 2000s being very distinct.
Adol's a literal self-insert who's only given a distinct personality in anime format (most anime he appears in are satirical and give him a fucking meme personality because he's a blank slate wooden plank otherwise), and ironically the more recent games.

People complain about "self-inserts" in modern JRPG character design (non-descript everyday Japanese dude), but I can't think of a recent, relevant JRPG protagonist who fits that description; That's originally a visual novel trope and we've seen those kinds of protagonists since the fucking 90s.

But the catch here is the attempt of "generic" protagonist by 90s designer standards is still less generic than the attempt at unique designs by modern developers. This happens because the mental frame of the creators was in another place in space-time, in which everything was made to look cool. Where are the people saying this? Every source I've known/seen from old animators and directors (people who've been in the industry as far back as the 60s-70s) like Tomino and Takahata, or even 90s guys like Mitsuo Iso, have all said that there's more talent in the anime industry today than there's ever been.
Tomino himself actually laments that he'd never be able to create something like Kimetsu no Yaiba (lol) back in the day because it was physically impossible.

They all attribute the decline in quality of modern anime specifically to the fact that the industry's grown too much; In the past, all of the talented writers, animators, directors, musicians, and artists could easily find themselves working on similar projects; That's why there's so many fucking phenomenal anime OVAs or anime movies from back in the day; The industry was smaller.

Now everybody's scattered across hundreds of studios. There's 50+ anime being made per season. Studios have to settle for hiring maybe a talented animator but have to skim off and hire an average director because the talented director's somewhere else making a project with good direction but shitty visuals.

Second season runs into the issue of a lot of the talent that made season 1 good being held up on other projects and not being able to return.

How cute, this is the part where people who haven't even watched the show pretend to be experts based on a two line synopsis.

Protag played to win throughout season 1 with no regards to his own health.
Protagonist played to die in the time between Season 1 and Season 2 before reuniting with the closest thing he has to family to protect.
The protagonist literally gets fucking brain damage and is told if he pushes himself further he'll die.
He still fights in the final match knowing it will kill him, and he'll openly fight to the death if he's allowed to go all out.
He tells his closest companion that's almost like a son/little brother to him to only decide to throw in the towel if things look bad since none of his family wants him to die.
His "little brother" throws in the towel and he's okay with the decision.

The entire point of the show is that the protagonist was a guy with nothing to lose and that's why he boxed, who gradually gains everything to lose and puts his life in the hands of his companions.
