Technically yes, but not in any way like how it happened in canon. Frieza never came to Namek because he was too busy laughing at Vegeta's misfortune and humiliation and never heard about the Dragon Balls. The trip to Namek instead resulted in an encounter with the Big Gete Star, with its host being a mutated Namekian spawn like King Piccolo's offspring, one that had originated on planet Eros (the planet in GT where the first Shadow Dragons spawned eons ago). A few still got a Potential Unlock from Guru before the Big Gete Star attacked, most notably Yamcha, who got a boost equivalent to the endgame one he could get in Super Saiya Densetsu (putting him almost on par with 2nd form Frieza). The fight against the Big Gete Star was tough but fun, though the arc didn't actually end with its defeat, and instead shifted into a "lost in space" section after one of Towa's minions uses Instant Transmission to grab and teleport most of the people that went to Namek to random planets across the universe. Maple herself ended up on Imecka with the similarly trapped Ginyu Force, who got humiliated on Yardrat and stranded there, with Captain Ginyu himself beaten and captured by Ledgic. The misadventures in space see her reunite with Chiaotzu, visit many filler episode planets and even Metamor, and finally arrive on Brench where the displaced Lazuli ended up working with a bunch of freedom fighters trying to assassinate Cooler. The plan goes awry and in a desperate Solar Flare-Destructo Disk combo, she tries to follow through with one last attempt and... misses Cooler by a hair, instead hitting an off-guard King Cold and nearly killing him.
So instead of Frieza showing up on Namek, he, Cooler, and King Cold (who is saved thanks to help from Gero, another courtesy of Towa) gather forces to invade Earth and make an example of it. The end result is far more of a massive slugfest, one that brings in some very, very confused time travelers, but sees all three vanquished.
