He's not that out of place. Cassandra Cain came first. And Cassandra is literally just a ninja assassin who was trained since childhood to be the greatest assassin and martial artist of all time. Even though she's a teenaged girl, DC still considers her one of the best martial artists in DC. She even beat Batman in hand to hand combat.
So if Cassandra can easily beat Batman, then I don't see why Damian couldn't go around beating up adults as a kid
