Funny this came out I literally just started arkham asylum 2 days ago, I tried it like 2 years ago but didn't beat it before.

I really think the arkham games have severely underrated combat, it looks like it might get too excessive in the sequels but at least in asylum it feels really nice and rewarding to tackle big groups of enemies but still have to pay attention to positioning and crowd control

The combat gets better with each game, try all the combat challenges in City and Knight when you get there, they're difficult but still a lot of fun.

Honestly Knight gets way too much criticism for how much fun the combat is in that game, it's really polished and the challenges like the killer croc arena where the enemies keep spawning much like the joker one in city is fantastic. It's really satisfying getting the max rating in all the combat challenges.

I still find it incredible that rocksteady went from making arkham knight in 2015 and it took them almost a decade to release the steaming pile of shit that was suicide squad.

Was it just sunk cost fallacy? Like they started making this game and they knew it was shit, but they had already invested so much time and money, almost a decade in development and they just couldn't back out even though they probably knew it was going to be dogshit? Did they just lose all their talent so there was no one left to even call out that it was going to flop hard? I just don't understand how they went from making such a critically acclaimed, successful franchise to such garbage.

I agree, it gets a lot of flak probably because when it released it was in such a sorry state performance wise on PC. I actually didn't play it until several years after it came out and was blown away with how good it was. People just got mad at the story and how obvious it was that it was Jason Todd, and everyone knew it before the game was even out and Rocksteady denied it over and over again.

The batmobile is a little too much, there's tons of padded content for it on the map but I will say that while it gets repetitive, it is polished and well designed and doesn't feel janky at all to use. My favorite part of the game though was all the combat challenges and getting perfect freeflows in all of them especially the killer croc one where you need a combo of 300x to get him to spawn and then nightwing comes in and you can take him down and continue.

Having played Knight for the first time recently, it stands out from the other two in a bad way even outside the dogshit batmobile segments. Just tonally, it feels like its imitating the Nolan movies rather than the mix of TAS and Arkham Asylum Living Hell that the previous two had been. There's an obsession with making everything as grim as it can possibly be and it's just tedious. Jason Todd can't just be killed by the joker, no, the Joker had killed a class of kindergarteners to lure him into a trap. Barbara Gordon can't just appear to killed, she needs to be given fear gas and kill herself while batman watches and then Jim Gordon has a falling out with him over it. It's just too much.

Also as soon as Jason Todd comes up, you know exactly who the mystery villain is, and he's a shit villain. People were excited to see new Scarecrow sequences after how memorable they were in Asylum and yet we get almost fucking nothing despite him being one of the main villains.

Batman Beyond is not a property WB has any interest in reviving and the connections that the Arkham series had to the animated series universe all got discarded by the time Knight came out. You have a better chance of getting a Dark Knight Returns game and even that is extremely unlikely. If WB had greenlit that Batman Beyond movie the Spiderverse guys pitched then maybe things would be different, but we're not living in that world.

A Batman game I'd like to see is one that takes place early on in Bruce's career while taking on the mob, where he's building up his reputation as Batman, and you can also sort of influence the direction he takes.

For instance, there could be three broad paths Bruce can take: "Caped Crusader", which takes a less violent approach. Utilizing a less brutal fighting style and a variety of gadgets, Batman can apprehend criminals while minimizing potential harm. You'll need a little more skill and planning to take down enemies quickly and efficiently.

Alternatively, there's "Dark Knight", which is more violent and brutal but also more direct. Using bone-breaking techniques and tools with higher potential for lethality, it's a style that's more in line with Frank Miller's take, or the Burton and Snyder films. There's a possibility that criminals might succumb to their injuries if Batman utilizes this style, which will directly affect his relationship with the GCPD and Gordon.

And finally, there's a middle path, with elements of both.

At first, Bruce is mainly just dealing with "normal" mobsters like Falcone and Zucco, but things have been changing a lot over the years, even before he donned the cowl, and by the end he'll be dealing with less orthodox enemies like The Penguin and finally Two-Face. The path Bruce takes can also subtly alter Two-Face's fate. Ultimately, I don't think the player should be able to prevent Dent from becoming Two-Face, but maybe have a degree of influence on the ratio of dominance between his personalities.

Also, partway through the game, he takes in Dick Grayson which could also have game/story ramifications.

The problem with AK wasn't that the game sucked or anything, it was how fucking often they made you fight in the Batmobile. Like Batmobile handles nice when it's not in tank mode but it still takes away from you going around as Batman and then they also make you fight in a tank more often than, again, as Batman. If the Batmobile wasn't used as often it would've been the best entry in the series easily

I liked battank mode. It made the game play like a FPS and broke up the monotony of punching dudes. I was like many others and couldn't get into it at launch. Played it again a couple years ago and loved it. It played and felt great. Then I did every mission besides riddler trophies before the final mission. The game forces you to clear 1 additional mission after this. That means you I needed to find 150 riddler trophies before the game allowed me to beat it. The kind of game design that goes into that decision is incomprehensible. Now I hate the fuck out of it. Never have I had such a roller coaster ride of emotions when it comes to a video game.

The problem is that there was no reason to revert to the batmobile in the vast majority of cases. Bat tank sequences and bat mobile sequences were entirely separate. There's no reason you needed to switch between them on the fly. Toggle mode was simply better because you only needed to press the button once, having to hold it down was pointless and added a small but noticeable layer of extra tedium. Controls matter.

This game was known about for a year or two when old concept art of it got leaked. Pic related. The idea was that after Knight, Gotham would've been run down and in ruins with the remainder of the Bat Family trying to keep order in the city. There was concept art for an old Bruce drawn up and you can find it really easily by searching for 'arkham game cancelled' or something. It's really cool to see models were being made for it though which shows how far along it was in development.

This was cancelled because WB Games ordered Montreal to work on a Suicide Squad game to serve as the Origins-esque filler game between Knight and this, but when Montreal ran into dev trouble they changed their minds and management wanted a GAAS. Apparently this game's assets and concepts were then given to Montreal to make into Gotham Knights and Rocksteady was given the Suicide Squad project. This was when WB was really trying to push the Suicide Squad in marketing so it doesn't seem surprising they'd want their 'best Batman team' to do the next big DC game.

He's not that out of place. Cassandra Cain came first. And Cassandra is literally just a ninja assassin who was trained since childhood to be the greatest assassin and martial artist of all time. Even though she's a teenaged girl, DC still considers her one of the best martial artists in DC. She even beat Batman in hand to hand combat.
So if Cassandra can easily beat Batman, then I don't see why Damian couldn't go around beating up adults as a kid

He's been in both of the Batman Ninja flicks, the Batman centered media in the nu52 animated lineup (the one that ends with Apokolips war), the Harley Quinn show, and the Batman vs TMNT movie.

The first time the public came close to being okay with Damian Wayne existing was when Dick took over the mantle during Bruce's tumble through time, because Damian played the edgy straight man to Dick's lighthearted comic.
