Didn't need to because it had nearly no opposition, N64 was an utter garbage failure everywhere outside the US, Playstation basically ruled the console business in the latter half of the 90s. N64 games cost 2-4x as much and nearly all multiplatforms were garbage on N64. It was a Mario/Zelda/Rare machine.

No, people bought it because it was the most hyped up machine in history. Supercomputing in a console, Emotion Engine, 75 million Polygons Per Second, not allowed to be sold to Iraq because it could run ballistic missiles, that sorts of shit was all in the news.
But it playing DVDs was a gigantic key factor in it selling as good as it did, because nearly nobody had DVDs yet. And oh my look at that DVD sales SKYROCKETED after the PS2 launch what a coincidence surely that had nothing to do with millions of PS2s with DVD playback hitting the markets.
