In my experience, this just makes things worse for the games that do it. If we pretended it would actually work and they wouldn't still be facing smurfs, then their experience becomes that they start playing with their starter deck vs other starter decks, and are spending time learning and growing to enjoy that sort of 2008 style of Yugioh where everyone is normal summon, set 1 passing. Then they rank up one more time and they now have to face real modern decks. Suddenly all the effort they just put into learning how to play the game that was was a waste, and the feeling that they were improving was a lie because everyone else is playing a different game.
I think it's better to rip the bandage off early so they can realize that the game doesn't play the way they saw it on TV 20 years ago.
What Konami really needs to do is update the tutorial with a new set of duels that teaches you not just the basic mechanics but how the game is actually played.
