the tip is just bait for a doordasher to take the job. they can see both the pay and the distance they have to drive (plus how many items they'll have to shop for if it's a shopping order) and can decide to accept or reject the offer. with these kinds of apps it's less like a gratuity and more like a bid.
doordash should just charge a delivery fee based on mileage and give drivers adequate base pay so that every offer is worth it (with the option to pretip if it's a dire emergency and you need the item NOW, or if you're in an inconvenient area, or it's late at night).
but they won't, because scab thirdies will take ANY offer, even if it makes them $6/hr after gas and wear and tear.
